Local rule · United StatesFull retirement age: 67 for people born in 1960 or later. You can claim from 62, with benefits reduced by 30%.

A projection from constant assumptions, not financial advice. Real returns vary year to year, and the rules of your pension scheme take precedence.

The formula

Accumulation uses the future value formula. Drawdown uses the annuity payment formula, M = C · j / (1 − (1 + j)^−k), which exhausts capital C over k months at monthly rate j. Today's money divides by (1 + inflation)^years.

Worked example

At 35, with 25,000 saved and 500 a month at 5.5% to age 64: capital of 573,000, paying 2,717 a month for 25 years at 3%, or 1,540 in today's money at 2% inflation.

How to use it

  1. 1The retirement age starts at the statutory age of the country you selected; change it if you plan otherwise.
  2. 2Use a lower return for the retirement phase, since portfolios usually get more conservative.
  3. 3Read the income in today's money: it is the figure that tells you how you would actually live.

Questions people ask

Does this include my state pension?

No. State and occupational pension rules differ too much between countries to fold into one formula. Treat this as the private savings part and add your statement's figure on top.

What if I outlive the capital?

The income is set to exhaust the capital exactly over the years you enter. Extending that period lowers the income; a lifetime annuity transfers that risk to an insurer, usually at a lower rate.
