The formula
Total = bill × (1 + tip / 100), optionally rounded, then divided by the number of people.
Worked example
A bill of 240 with a 10% tip is 264, or 66 each between four.
How to use it
- 1Tip on the amount before tax where that is the local habit.
- 2Rounding up changes the effective rate, which is shown so you can see it.
- 3Check the bill for a service charge already included.
Questions people ask
How much should I tip?
It varies sharply by country. Tipping is expected and substantial in the United States, modest or optional across much of Europe, and uncommon in Japan. Look up the local norm rather than exporting your own.
Service charge already added?
Then the tip has been collected. Anything extra is genuinely optional, and in some places the service charge does not reach the staff — asking is reasonable.
