Net worth calculator

Net worth is assets minus liabilities. The arithmetic is trivial; the usual mistakes are counting the house without the mortgage, or valuing a car at what you paid for it. Each side has its own fields so neither gets forgotten.

The formula

Net worth = (cash + investments + property + vehicles + other) − (mortgage + loans + cards). Liquid net worth counts only cash and investments, less card debt, because that is what could be reached within weeks.

Worked example

With 30,000 in cash, 80,000 invested, a 900,000 home, a car worth 120,000, a 600,000 mortgage, 60,000 of other loans and 8,000 on cards: assets of 1,130,000, liabilities of 668,000, and a net worth of 462,000 — of which only 102,000 is liquid.

How to use it

  1. 1Value property at what it would sell for now, not what you paid or what you hope.
  2. 2Value vehicles at resale, which is usually well below the purchase price after a year or two.
  3. 3Recalculate once or twice a year on the same date. The trend tells you more than any single figure.

Questions people ask

Should my pension count?

Yes, at its current transfer or fund value, though it is not liquid. That is why liquid net worth is reported separately: it is the money you could actually use in an emergency.

My net worth is negative. Is that unusual?

Not early in a career, and not with student debt or a recent car loan. What matters is the direction: a negative figure that rises each year is a healthier position than a positive one that falls.
